In their honor, Romanians (and probably some other Balkan nations) prepare some sweet wheat bread, eaten with honey and walnuts, with the recipe being different from region to region.
In Moldova this sweets are larger and they are baked in the oven and covered with honey and walnuts. Meanwhile in Muntenia (Wallachia) they are little and boiled with honey, walnuts and cinnamon.
Today we will show you the Wallachian recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1.3 liters of water
- 150 grams of Mucenici (dough in form of the number eight - these can be bought in the Balkan stores, or homemade)
- zest from one lemon
- 100 grams of crashed walnuts
- 5 spoons of honey (according to taste)
- vanilla sugar
- cinnamon
- rum essence
- salt
In case if you haven't find the "Mucenici" in the store, here is a recipe of how you can make them:
- 100 grams of flour (depends how many you want to make)
- 50 milliliters of warm water
- salt
Mix the flour with the warm water and the salt until you obtain a non-sticky dough.
Divide the dough and roll it until is very thin. Make thin chains.
Separate the chain like in the picture. Let them dry at least 10 hours.
Put the walnuts in the oven for 10 minutes at 190 degrees Celsius and then crush them.
Put the water with the salt and vanilla sugar to boil.
When the water is boiling add the Mucenici, and let them boil for 30-40 minutes at slow fire mixing from time to time.
Grate the lemon and add it over the composition.
Add the honey, the rum, the cinnamon and the walnuts.
You can eat it warm or cold.
Bon Appetit!
